阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

There are records of fingerprints taken many centuries ago. The ancient Babylonians pressed the tips of their fingerprints into clay to record business trade. The Chinese used ink-on-paper finger impressions for business. However, fingerprinting wasn't used as a method for identifying criminals until the 19th century.

In 1858, Sir William Herschel was working as an official of the Hooghly district in Jungipoor, India. In order to reduce fraud(诈骗), he had people living in the district record their fingerprints when signing business documents. A few years later, Scottish doctor Henry Faulds was working in Japan when he discovered fingerprints left by artists on ancient pieces of clay. This finding inspired him to begin investigating fingerprints. In 1880, Faulds wrote to his cousin, the famous naturalist Charles Darwin, and asked for help with developing a fingerprint classification system.Darwin refused, but sent the letter to his cousin, Sir Francis Gallon, who was an eugenicist (优生学家). Gallon began collecting fingerprints and eventually gathered some 8, 000 different samples to analyze. In 12, he published a book called \"Fingerprints\in which he outlined a fingerprint classification system—the first existence.

Around the same time, Juan Vucetich, a police officer in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was developing his own version of a fingerprinting system. In 12, Vucetich was called in to assist with the investigation of the two boys murdered in Necoche, a village near Buenos Aires. Their mother, Francisca Rojas, accused a neighbour named Velasquez. But when Vucetich compared the fingerprints found at the murder scene to those of both Velasquez and Rojas, they matched Rojas' exactly. She admitted her crime. This was the first time fingerprints had been used in a criminal investigation.Vucetich called his system comparative dactyloscopy(指纹鉴定法). It's still used in many Spanish-speaking countries.

Sir Edward Henry, in charge of the Metropolitan Police of London, soon became interested in using fingerprints to catch criminals. In 16, he added to Gallon's technique, creating his own classification system, the Henry Classification System. It is the primary method of fingerprint classification throughout most of the world.

A. develop a fingerprinting system B. prevent illegal business C. put them on pieces of clay D. collect and study fingerprints 57.Who first came up with the idea of creating a fingerprint classification system? The forces that make Japan one of the world's most earthquake-prone(有地震倾向的) countries could become part of its long-term energy solution.

Water from deep below the ground at Japan's tens of thousands of hot springs could be used to produce electricity.

Although Japanese high-tech companies are leaders in geothermal(地热的) technology and export it, its use is limited in the nation.

\"Japan should no doubt make use of its resources of geothermal energy,\" said Yoshiyasu Takefuji, a leading researcher of thermal-electric power production.

The disastrous earthquake and tsunami on March 11, caused a reaction against atomic power, which previously made up 30 percent of Japan's energy needs, and increased interest in alternative energies, which account for only 8 percent.

Artist Yoko Ono has called on Japan to explore its natural energy, following the example of Iceland which uses renewable energy for more than 80 percent of its needs. Scientists guess that 80% of a person's weight gain comes from genetics and 20% comes from the person's environment. By 1998, more than 130 genes and gene neighbors were found to have some link to weight gain or weight loss in people. These different genes can either work all together or work in groups. This means that different people may ___________________or lose weight with difficulty for different reasons.

One example of these different kinds of combinations is a family of genes that allows people to change extra fat into heat instead of storing the fat in the body. Animals which have this same family of genes do not gain weight easily as other animals. Other genes may affect how quickly the stomach lets the brain know that it is full. If these genes slow down the passage of this information, people may eat more than they really need. Genes are also thought to be linked with a person’s fidgets in a day. Fidgeting is small movements of a person's hands, feet, arms or legs usually when the person is nervous or excited. Fidgeting actually uses a lot of energy over a day and his energy usually comes from burning fat.

In one experiment about weight gain, researchers wanted to see how much energy different people used when they were resting. People in the experiment were asked to lie on a bed and not move for 40 minutes. Researchers then measured the energy the person used for breathing. They found that different people in the study used very different amounts of energy for this one job, breathing. Researchers calculated that some people in the study burned 1,067 calories per day while others burned up to 3,015 calories. Those people who burn fewer calories doing normal work or exercise have a slow metabolism(新陈代谢).

Optimism is important in all aspects of our life. If you can change your mind

第7页 共10页

from pessimism, you can change your life.

Up to the beginning of Senior Grade Two, I did poorly in my English but I didn’t give in because I was always encouraged by both the people around me and myself. I kept practicing speaking, listening, reading and writing. When I was fed up with reading or writing, I usually entertained myself by reading some interesting English stories, jokes and humors or seeing English films. When I had some trouble in reciting or memorizing, I tried to amuse myself by playing word games or singing English songs. By this means, I always made myself cheerful and optimistic, full of splendid and colorful dreams of future. I kept practicing. Gradually, I made progress in my English. .

Thanks to the optimism, I have become one of the top students in my class by now.

Text 1

M: I think I’ll have ice cream for dessert. What would you like to have? W: The chocolate cake looks delicious to me. But I want to lose weight. Text 2

W: Do you have any plans for this weekend, John?

M: I’m actually supposed to go out of town with my parents. It’s my dad’s birthday, and they invited my sister and I to go skiing with them.

W: Oh, that sounds nice! I was going to ask if you wanted to go to the movies with me.

M: How about next weekend? Text 3

M: Josie, would you mind helping me paint my bedroom tomorrow? My brother was going to help me, but he broke his arm yesterday. I will make you lunch... what do you say?

W: Of course I will help you, Oliver. I am sorry to hear about your brother’s arm. I hope he feels better soon. Text 4

M: How do you figure out the fare?

W: Well, the first five kilometers are $5, and every extra kilometer costs you $3. Text 5

W: Do you have any experience doing this kind of work, Mr. Jacobs?

M: I’m afraid I don’t, madam, but I’ve always been interested in this type of work. And I have a lot of other experience, as you can see from my résumé. Text 6

M: Hello, madam. What can I do for you?

W: My feet hurt. I think I need some new shoes. M: What size do you wear?

W: The last time I bought new shoes was about a year ago, and at that time, I was a 7. M: Well, once you get to be in your twenties, your feet stop growing, so you are probably still a 7. But let’s measure them just in case.

第8页 共10页

W: OK… so, what does it say?

M: Well, it looks like you’re an 8. No wonder your feet have been hurting you. You’ve been wearing shoes that are one size too small! Text 7

W: Whew! Thanks for stopping. Sometimes it can be impossible to get a cab in the rain.

M: No worries. Where to?

W: I’m going to Fifth Avenue and East 22nd Street. No rush at all, though.

M: Well, that’s good because it looks like we’re not going to be able to move more than a few feet per minute!

W: Well, that’s what happens when it starts to rain during rush hour. I’m one of the lucky ones. Usually, I would have an appointment around this time, but today I get to go home early!

M: That’s great, madam. I’ll try to get you home as early as possible. Text 8

W: OK, that’s a cut! Let’s take it from the top, everyone. M: What was the problem that time?

W: The feeling was all wrong, Mike. She is telling you that she doesn’t want to see you anymore, but I want to get more anger from you. You’re acting hurt and sad, but that’s not how your character would act in this situation.

M: But Jason and Laura have been together for three years. Don’t you think his reaction would be one of both anger and sadness?

W: At this point, no. I think he would react the way most guys would, and then later on, we would see his real feelings. M: I’m not so sure about that.

W: Let’s try it my way, and you can see how you feel when you’re saying your lines. After that, if it still doesn’t feel right, we can go back to the drawing board. Text 9

W: Have you been watching the Euro football tournament? M: Just a bit. Why, have you?

W: Of course! I’ve really started to like football since I came to London. Just think, a year ago, I was still in Montreal and didn’t know a thing about it.

M: Well, I’m from New Jersey. Americans aren’t so into football. Actually, we call it soccer. When Americans say “football”, what we mean is American rules football. I’ve been here two years now, and I still get confused when people call soccer “football”.

W: I know all about America. For you, “football” means the sport where those big guys wear helmets and violently run into each other.

M: Yeah. Americans prefer watching sports that are fast, like basketball. I think basketball players are the greatest athletes on earth. What they can do just amazes me. But when I watch a soccer match, I just get bored. There aren’t enough goals. W: Well, I see what you’re saying, but there’s so much more to “soccer”, as you call it, than goals. There’re a lot of strategies involved. And in a tournament like Euro , it’s fascinating to see how the different countries have different styles of playing.

Welcome back to Modern Parenting. We’ve already talked about being open and honest with your kids, but there is one thing that all good parents do, and it’s surprisingly simple: read to your kids. Studies show that children are better prepared for school and tend to get better grades later on if their parents make a habit of reading to them from a young age. One study from Harvard University found that the number of books in the home was the single biggest factor related to success in school, more than the education or income of the parents! Reading is fun, and it can be an important part of relaxing at bedtime. Best of all, it gives parents an opportunity to communicate with their children and teach them about the world. It’s never too early to start reading to your children. Many parents buy books for their kids long before they can talk, and some even start reading to their children before they are born! Trips to the library or the bookstore can be fun activities for young families to do together. So parents, if you’re wondering what to do with your kids tonight, remember: all you need is a good book! That’s all for Modern Parenting. This is Lesley, on 105.7 FM, saying good night.
