Part III Reading Comprehension (40 minutes, 40 points)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.

More surprising, perhaps, than the current difficulties of traditional marriage is the fact that marriage itself is alive and thriving. As Skolnick notes, Americans are a marrying people: relative to Europeans, more of us marry and we marry at a younger age. Moreover, after a decline in the early 1970s, the rate of

marriage in the United States is now increasing. Even the divorce rate needs to be taken in this pro-marriage context:some 80 percent of divorced individuals remarry. Thus, marriage remains, by far, the preferred way of life for the vast majority of people in our society. What has changed more than marriage is the nuclear family. Twenty five years ago, the typical American family consisted of a husband, a wife, and two or three children. Now, there are many marriages in which couples have decided not to have any children. And there are many marriages where at least some of the children are from the wife’s previous marriage, or the husband’s, or both. Sometimes these children spend all of their time with one parent from the former marriage; sometimes they are shared between the two former spouses (配偶). Thus, one can find every type of family arrangement. There are marriages without children; marriages with children from only the present marriage; marriages with “full-time” children from both the present and former marriages; marriages with “full-time” children from the present marriage and “part-time” children from former marriages. There are stepfathers, stepmothers, half brothers, and half sisters. It is not all that unusual for a child to have four parents and eight grandparents! These are enormous changes from the traditional nuclear family. But even so, even in the midst of all this, there remains one constant; most Americans spend most of their adult lives married.

31. By calling Americans marrying people the author means that______. A.Americans are more traditional than Europeans

B.Americans expect more out of marriage than Europeans C.there are more married couples in USA than in Europe

D.more of Americans, as compared with Europeans, prefer marriage and they accept it at a younger age

32. Divorced Americans______.

A.will most likely remarry B.prefer the way they live C.have lost faith in marriage

D.are the vast majority of people in the society

33. Which of the following can be presented as the picture of today’s American families?

A.A typical American family consists of only a husband and a wife. B.Many types of family arrangements have become socially acceptable. C.Americans prefer to have more kids than before. D.There are no nuclear families any more.

34. “Part-time” children______.

A.spend some of their time with their half brothers and some of their time with their half sisters

B.spend all of their time with one parent from the previous marriage C.are shared between the two former spouses D.cannot stay with “full-time” children

A“一半时间同异父(母)同母(父)兄弟在一起,一半时间同异父(母)同母(父)姐妹在一起”;B“同原父母中的一个单亲一起生活”;D“不能和‘全时的’孩子在一起生活”。

35. Even though great changes have taken place in the structure of American families, _____.

A.the functions of marriage remain unchanged

B.the vast majority of Americans still have faith in marriage C.most Americans prefer a second marriage D.all of the above

Large companies need a way to reach the savings of the public at large. The same problem, on a smaller scale, faces practically every company trying to develop new products and create new jobs. There can be little prospect of raising the sort of sums needed from friends and people we know, and while banks may agree to provide short-term finance, they are generally unwilling to provide money on a permanent basis for long-term projects. So companies turn to the public, inviting people to lend them money, or take a share in the business in exchange for a share in future profits. This they do by issuing stocks and shares in the business through the Stock Exchange. By doing so they can put into circulation the savings of individuals and institutions, both at home and overseas. When the saver needs his money back, he does not have to go to the company with whom he originally placed it. Instead, he sells his shares through a stockbroker to some other saver who is seeking to invest (投资) his money. Many of the services needed both by industry and by each of us are provided by the Government or by local authorities. Without hospitals, roads, electricity, telephones, railways, this country could not function. All these require continuous spending on new equipment and new development if they are to serve us

properly, requiring more money than is raised through taxes alone. The Government, local authorities, and nationalized industries therefore frequently need to borrow money to finance major capital spending, and they, too, come to the Stock Exchange. There is hardly a man or woman in this country whose job or whose standard of living does not depend on the ability of his or her employers to raise money to finance new development. In one way or another this new money must come from the savings of the country. The Stock Exchange exists to provide a channel through which these savings can reach those who need finance.

36. Almost all companies involved in new production and development must______.

A.rely on their own financial resources

B.persuade the banks to provide long-term finance

C.borrow large sums of money from friendly people they know D.depend on the population as a whole for finance

37. The money which enables these companies to go ahead with their projects is______.

A.repaid to its original owners as soon as possible B.raised by the selling of shares in the companies

C.exchanged for part ownership in the Stock Exchange D.invested in different companies on the Stock Exchange

38. When the savers want their money back, they______. A.ask another company to obtain their money for them B.look for other people to borrow money from

C.put their shares in the company back on the market D.transfer their money to a more successful company

39. All the essential services on which we depend are______. A.run by the Government or our local authorities B.financed wholly by rates and taxes

C.unable to provide for the needs of the population D.in constant need of financial support

40. The Stock Exchange makes it possible for the Government, local authorities and nationalized industries______.

A.to borrow as much money as they wish B.to make certain everybody saves money C.to raise money to finance new developments D.to make certain everybody lends money to them

The social sciences, as the name shows, are the scientific study of the behavior of human beings, both in groups and individually. There is no past or present information of human beings who were not in groups. The groups may be small, like the family, or large, like a city or nation. But in order to reach complete development, man must be a member of a society. It is true that some individuals are more solitary than others. Some, like monks or hermits, may decide, for religious or other reasons, to leave their society and live alone. But these are unusual individuals, and even they can not separate themselves completely from the rest of mankind. A society, then, seems to be the natural environment of mankind. Scholars who study mankind in social organizations are called social scientists. The human behavior which social scientists study is learned behavior. The behavior of the human body as a living organism is studied by the biologist, the biochemist, or the physician. This behavior of man’s physical body is inherited through the genetic development of his species. For example, all physical normal and healthy humans learn to walk as their bodies grow and develop. Social scientists concern themselves with the behavior that man must learn so that he can take his place in a social group. In order to be a functioning member of a group, each member must learn to behave in a way acceptable to other

members of that group. The kind of behavior, which must be learned, differs according to the differences among societies. The social scientists are newcomers to academic studies. By the end of the nineteenth century, the natural sciences had developed a method, by which they were able to understand the physical world. By using the scientific method, chemists, physicists, and astronomers, for example, learned a great deal about the universe. It seemed reasonable to apply the same method to the study of man’s social life. Through this kind of study man may learn to understand himself much better. The scientific method is a way of collecting facts in order to describe an existing situation as correctly and completely as possible. The description must consist only of what can be perceived, analyzed, measured, and recorded. Feelings and personal opinions or ideas have no place in scientific description. The facts must be observed and described in such a way that another scientist could repeat the same study and get the same results.

41. According to the passage, what is true about all human being? A.They are more solitary than others. B.They all belong to clubs.

C.They are all members of groups.

D.They separate themselves from the rest of world.

42. What does a social scientist study? A.The family.

B.Human beings as members of groups. C.Nation.

D.Molecules and ions.

The social sciences…are the scientific study of the behavior of human beings…Scholars who study mankind in social organizations are called social scientists.

43. How does social behavior differ from physical behavior? A.It is learned.

B.It is inherited from our ancestors. C.It depends on genetic development. D.It is the same for all human beings.

45. How many groups of people using the scientific method are mentioned in the passage?

A.Three. B.Two. C.One. D.Four.

By using the scientific method,chemists,physicists,and astronomers,for example,learned a great deal about the universe.

“Much of the sickness and death attributed to the major communicable (可传染的) diseases is in fact caused by malnutrition (营养不良) which makes the body less able to withstand infections when they strike,” said Dr. Hiroshi Nakajima, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). “At the same time,” he added, “in developing countries today, malnutrition is the cause of 174 million children under five years of age being underweight, and 230 million being stunted in their growth. Such figures represent deprivation, suffering and wasted human potential on a scale that is unacceptable from every point of view. Whether we think in terms of humanitarian concern, common justice or development needs, they demand a response, both from national governments and from the international community. “ WHO, working closely with its member states, other United

Nations agencies and nongovernmental organizations, is focusing on major crippling (致残的) forms of malnutrition, such as protein-energy malnutrition, vitamin A deficiency (缺乏,不足). At the end of January 1996, 98 countries had national plans of action for nutrition and 41 countries had one under preparation, in keeping with their commitments made at the International Conference on Nutrition in Rome December 1992. The global situation, however, remains grim. Over 800 million people around the world still cannot meet basic needs for energy and protein, more than two thousand million people lack essential micro-nutrients, and hundreds of millions suffer from diseases caused by unsafe food or unbalanced diets. It is now recognized that 6. 6 million out of the estimated 12. 2 million deaths annually among children under five—or 54% of young child mortality (死亡率) in developing countries—is associated with malnutrition In addition to the human suffering, the loss in human potential translates into social and economic costs that no country can afford. In 1990, only 53 developing countries had reliable data on the number of young children under weight; by 1995, 97 countries had such data, nearly all of which included information on stunting and wasting. In some regions, such as sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia, stagnation of nutritional improvement combined with a rapid rise in population has resulted in an actual increase in the total number of malnourished children. Currently, over two-thirds of the world’s malnourished children live in Asia (especially south Asia) , followed by Africa and Latin America.

46. According to Dr. Nakajima, ______.

A.malnutrition actually subjects many children to sickness or death B.the inability to communicate with others results from malnutrition

C.international aid should be provided for countries who cannot take care of their children

D.developing countries should not deprive their children of healthy growth

47. The word “stunted” in Line 6, Para. 1 can be replaced by______. A.shocked B.prevented C.unbalanced D.broken

48. It can be inferred from Para. 2 that______.

A.WHO does not pay enough attention to minor forms of malnutrition B.the international community reached a consensus to fight malnutrition in 1992 C.WHO member countries have well fulfilled their promise for nutrition plans D.the number of deaths caused by malnutrition has been increasing since 1992

49. According to the writer, what is the worst thing caused by high young child mortality?

A.The suffering children are subjected to.

B.Inaccurate and unreliable data on child mortality. C.The large-scale waste of human potential.

D.The lack of labor force for economic development.

50. The tone of the writer’s conclusion concerning the nutrition problem in some countries is

A.objective B.pessimistic C.optimistic D.concerned

Part V Translation (30 minutes, 10 points)Directions: Translate the following passage into Chinese and put your translation on the ANSWER SHEET.

61. These collective changes in the content, character, and execution of China’s foreign policy over the past ten years represent an important evolution from Beijing’s narrow and reactive approach to global affairs in the 1980s and early 1990s. Yet potentially even more significant changes are now taking place. Within the last three years, and especially since September 11, 2001, the writings of Chinese strategists have begun to reflect a critical shift in their view of the international system and China’s role in it. For example, provocative articles have recently run in major Chinese newspapers and journals advocating that China abandon its long-held victim mentality. The writers reject the persistent emphasis on China’s “150 years of shame and humiliation” as the main lens through which Chinese view their place in modern international affairs. Influential Chinese analysts have begun to promote instead China’s adoption of a “great-power mentality. “ This emerging notion would replace Chinese victimhood with a confidence born of two decades of impressive economic growth.

Part VI Writing (30 minutes, 15 points) 62. You are to write in no less than 120 words about the title “How Should We Travel”. You should base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below:

Some people suggest people using as much public transportation as possible. They think a person is more relaxed on the bus or subway, for he doesn’t have to concentrate on driving. He can even get some reading and studying done during the commute time. Moreover, people don’t have to worry about finding a

parking place. In addition, when using public transportation, we help lessen air pollution and traffic jams. But some others think otherwise. They argue that private cars are a more convenient way to get to any place at any time. Particularly, after a day’s tiring work, they don’t have to rush to get on a bus, but only to find that they have to stand all the way in the uncomfortable, densely packed bus. In my opinion, both ways of commuting have their own advantages and disadvantages. But in comparing the two, I prefer to use as much public transportation as possible. If more and more people used public transportation, air pollution, would be better controlled and expenses would be reduced. That in turn would attract more and more people to use it. The more people that used it, the more money transportation business would get to improve its facilities and provide more locations and frequencies. I hope some day the public transportation system will be able to pro vide the convenience that a private car does.
