Learn to walk before you can run
Before I start I would like to extend my warm greetings to our panel of judges, teachers, classmates and schoolmates in general present here today. The topic for my speech today is “learn to walk before you can run”. Walking before running is a natural intuitive process than can be applied as an example in our daily life. Be it at school, work or any form of activity that requires one to learn and apply what he has learned in the process until he masters the task that needs to be done. On that note I will give a close example that we could all relate to. When a child is born, no one expects the child so start running around or talking. There are several stages the baby has to undergo before saying that first word or taking the first step. Of course all this happens under a strict constant supervision and guidance from the parents who encourage him take that first step until the baby does not need to be balanced anymore in his walks and able to walk by himself and eventually run.
The same can be said of us here as medical students. Our journey of becoming medical doctors, is a step by step process like that of the new born baby. We require guidance, courage, supervision and assistance from our teachers, which from the previous example I will refer to is as learning how to walk. You cannot be a first year medical student and already you can perform a heart operation for example. First, you should gain the relevant knowledge from school . Second,you need to be shown by heart surgeons like a child being guided by the mother, observe and under supervision perform minor operations until you are able to do the operations yourself ,meaning that being able to run. if you do not go through what I said as student (learning to walk) and you try to do an operation yet without posses relevant knowledge from school, you will kill the patient therefore failing how to run.
In conclusion ladies and gentlemen, I would like to plea with you not to jump to certain stages in life without going through relevant stages in life. Let us all be like a child who is learning how to walk. Like the parents to the child, we have teachers who are always willing to steadily guide us in learning how to walk until we are professional doctors and able to run by ourselves. Therefore it is very important you perfect your walking steps in life before you try to run because if you rush, you will fall.
Do not forget; learn to walk before you run.
