Glyn Davies used to work at Big Pit. He left school when he was 15 to work in the mine. For many years, he repaired the steel ropes which were used to pull the lift up and down. Now he is a museum guide.

Before Glyn takes visitors underground, he gives everyone a safety helmet to wear. Then everyone gets into the cage which quickly drops 90 meters down to the bottom of the shaft. It is very dark and damp in the mine. “There are 40 kilometres of tunnels in Big Pit.” Glyn says. “It was very important to get fresh air into the mine,” Glyn explains. “A fan and airing doors helped to get rid of dangerous gases.”

Glyn takes the visitors along the tunnels. He shows them the trucks that carried the coal and the rails they ran along. In some places, the ceiling is so low that everyone has to bend down. Water leaks from the roof and streams run along gutters(水沟) on the ground. The color of rocks becomes orange from the iron in the water. Then Glyn takes the visitors to the place where in the past there used to be over 70 horses. They lived in the dark all their lives and were used to pull the coal trucks.

Finally the visitors come to the coal face. Men worked in eight hours shifts(轮班) there. At night they cut away the coal. The morning shift loaded the trucks and the afternoon shift held up the ceiling so the new tunnel would be safe. It was a dangerous job and dust used to get into the miners‟ lungs which made them ill.

“As far as I am concerned,” Glyn says, “the coal from Big Pit was the finest in the world. Also we had very few accidents. The problem was that the coal ran out so the mine had to close. It was tough work but I am proud to have been a miner.” 56. We can learn from the passage that in the Big Pit ______. A. the tunnel was full of water with iron B. horses did all the work instead of miners

5

C. the mine closed because the coal ran out

D. the working conditions were the finest in the world

57. The underlined word “shaft” in the second paragraph probably means________. A. well B. rope C. lift D. pole 58. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Big Pit serves as a mining museum now. B. Glyn Davies used to be a guide. C. No accidents happened in the mine. D. Hard work made most miners ill.

59. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Glyn Davies‟ Working Experience B. Big Pit Used to Be a Mine C. A Visit to Big Pit

D. The Reason Why Big Pit Was Closed

British people are used to changing their plans for the rain. We‟d planned to see the sights of London today, but it was pouring. “I‟ve got an idea,” said Sam. “We‟ll do a Tube tour of London instead!”

“The Tube” refers to the London‟s metro (地铁)system. It first opened in 1863, and is the oldest underground railway in the world. It is also the second largest behind the Shanghai Metro, with 270 stations and 402km of track.

We took the Central Line to Bank——full name Bank-Monument. The “Monument” part refers to the Monument to the Great Fire of London, a tall column(柱) topped with flames made of gold. It honors the fire that destroyed the city of London in 1666. The “Bank” part refers to the Bank of England, the second oldest central bank in the world.

We jumped on the Waterloo and City line. Sam explained that Waterloo was the site(遗址) of a battle in present-day Belgium where the combined armies of the UK and Prussia beat a French army led by Napoleon in 1815. However, “loo” is an English word for “toilet”, so the name can sound a bit funny when put together with “water”! London‟s Waterloo is a really cultural place. The National Theatre is there, as is an arts center called the Southbank Centre, and art galleries like the Tate Modern. Nearby Borough Market sells fancy food from all over the world.

Next we got on board the Jubilee(周年纪念) Line, opened in 1979 to celebrate the Queen‟s silver jubilee; the line is silver on the map. We looked out at Westminster, where the beautiful Westminster Abbey stands beside Big Ben. We traveled under famous sites with every tube station: Green Park for Buckingham Palace, the Queen‟s house; Bond Street at the end of London‟s most famous shopping street, Oxford Street; up to Baker Street, named after the bakery where that Great Fire started out.

6

Then suddenly the sun came out. “Typical British weather!” laughed Sam, “It‟s so changeable! I know ——Let‟s do the rest of our trip by The Thames!”

60. What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph really mean? A. It often rains in London.

B. British people like doing a tour in the rain.

C. British people like to see the sights of London on a rainy day. D. British people often change their plans because of the weather. 61. From the passage, we can learn that _________. A. the Bank-Monument line is silver on the map

B. the Waterloo and City Line passes by Buckingham Palace

C. the fire that destroyed the city of London started in Bond Street

D. the Jubilee Line is a good line to take if you want to visit Westminster Abbey 62. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. London Underground is the largest underground railway in the world. B. The Monument to the Great Fire of London is made of gold.

C. The Bank of England is the second oldest central bank in the world. D. London‟s Waterloo was the site of a famous battle in history. 63. Sam‟s next plan for travelling is probably ________. A. to take a trip by bus B. to stay at home C. to enjoy the sunshine D. to take a trip by boat

C

Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet… We are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.

Diet products weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie(卡), unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the counter instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food brands.

On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don‟t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.

The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry

7

has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.

Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them. .The first paragraph mainly tells us _____. A. diet products can bring out people‟s potential B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products C. diet products are misleading people D. people are fed up with diet products

65. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to ____.

A. resist a variety of diet foods B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods

C. pay attention to their own eating habits D. watch their weight rather than their diet 66. The purpose of writing this passage is _________. A. to warn people of the side effect of diet products B. to tell people how to lose weight C. to advise people to eat diet products D. to introduce some diet products

67. Which of the following shows the structure(结构) of the passage?

CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: Conclusion

D

For many years the only help for deaf people was an „ear trumpet(喇叭)‟ that worked by making sounds louder as they passed from the trumpet into the ear. Then, as scientists understood the ear and how it works better, they developed cochlea implants(耳蜗植入物) .These tiny devices(装置) are implanted into the part of the ear called the cochlea and help a person to hear sounds.

In June 2011 scientists at the American University of Michigan announced what they hope will be a breakthrough in the treatment of deafness. They have developed a new type of implant that attaches to the main nerve(神经), carrying the nerve pulses from the ear to be responded by the brain. So far their device has only been tested on animals but the scientists hope that it will

8

be even more effective than cochlea implants. Their device works better over a wider range of frequencies and this should let users hear a greater range of sounds.

However, until the scientists in America have finished tryouts of the new device, the most common treatment for deafness is the hearing aid. There are many different types of hearing aid but most of them work in the same way. They have three main parts.

 A small microphone——this picks up sound waves coming into the ear and changes them

into an electrical signal.  An amplifier(扩大器)——this increases the strength of the

signal.

 A small speaker——this sends the amplified sound into the

ear.

Each hearing aid is „fine tuned‟ to electronically amplify the range of frequencies most needed by the wearer.

Improved technology has meant that modern hearing

aids are small and stylish——they can be mistaken for wireless

The modern hearing aid fits headsets. Today's technology can produce aids the size of a

neatly into the ear canal.

fingertip.

68. Which of the following can best serve as the title of this passage? A. New Technology Is Music to Deaf Ears B. „Ear Trumpet‟ Helps to Hear Sounds C. A New Treatment of Deafness D. Different Types of Hearing Aids

69. What‟s the right order of the development of the technology? a. an ear trumpet b. a cochlea implant

c. a new implant attached to the main nerve d. an ordinary hearing aid A. a, b, c, d B. b, a, d, c C. a, b, d, c D. a, d, b, c 70. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Ear trumpets are more effective than cochlea implants.

B. Hearing aids can be as small as a fingertip. C. Ear trumpets help users by way of sending nerve pulses. D. Hearing aids can be used as wireless headsets. 71. We can learn from the passage that _______. A. A small microphone sends the sound into the ear B. Different types of hearing aids work in the same way C. The new device can make wearers recover from deafness

D. The new device developed by American scientists hasn‟t been put into use

Is early childhood education really necessary? Early childhood education primarily focuses on learning through playing to develop the child‟s physical, sensory, communicational and social development. Early childhood education has become a concern of the government, who pushes poor children to be formally trained before they are old enough for kindergarten.

There are good reasons for the government to push early childhood education. Studies have shown that orphaned children(孤儿) who did not receive good care and education become developmentally delayed, causing failure in school, and even in life. Further studies show that poor children who take part in Head Start programs are more prepared for school, less likely to end up in Special Education classes, and are less likely to receive public help or go to prison.

There are also negative(负面的) parts to putting a child in formal education programs too early. Time Magazine online explains that “the younger the child the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work.” I have personally witnessed many children of my generation who went to Head Start programs become upset and bored with school before they finished high school. Yet parents have been sure that the earlier the child starts school, the better off he or she is, so they push to start children earlier.

Actually while early formal education of poor children does show great gains in the early primary years, studies also show that this head start is really a “false start”, as the gains are lost in middle and high school years. It seems that environment is a bigger factor(因素) on life‟s success than early education. Head Start programs have not achieved its original goal in closing the achievement gap in poor and middle school children. Perhaps it is time to find other ways to close that gap(差距).

72. The purpose of the government valuing the early childhood education is ________. A. to develop the children‟s communication

B. to give orphaned children good care and education C. to get the children prepared for the kindergarten D. to train the children formally and regularly

73. According to the studies in Paragraph 2, which of the following is True? A. Children with good early education may have a rich life. B. The orphaned children are usually unhappy in their life. C. Children without early education can do well at school. D. Head Start programs are helpful to the poor children.

74. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 suggests that _____________. A. the early childhood education is helpless to the child‟s grade B. it is good for the young children to receive early education

C. the early education can help the children follow first-grade work D. the younger the children are, the cleverer they will be

75. What‟s the author‟s attitude towards the early childhood education? A. He is uncertain about it. B. He disapproves of it. C. He is hopeful of it. D. He thinks highly of it.

With the rapid development of modern society, how to make best use of decreasing land resource has brought about a heated discussion. In order to grow more vegetables and build more houses, farmers as well as property developers demand the land separately. At the same time, businessmen ask for the land saying new factories should be built to bring lots of jobs.

Personally, I prefer to hold the view that the use of land should meet the farmers‟ demand. Imagine a world without green! No matter how big a house or how updated a factory will be, we cannot enjoy our life without enough farming product. Furthermore, we have had enough of the forest of high-rises in the city and suffered from various pollution from the factory. The world around us has been environmentally damaged. How can we keep on robbing farmers of the land just for some commercial consideration!

Therefore, I strongly suggest the land be used for farming. 听力原文 Text 1

M: Good morning, Maria. You are up early. W: Good morning, Albert. It‟s cold today.

M: It always gets colder after a heavy snowfall. Actually we haven‟t seen so much snow here for years. The snow‟s at least four inches deep.

W: I love snow. When I was a child, I made snowballs and would always go and play in the snow. Do you like skating, Albert?

M: Yes, of course. I hope the lakes will be frozen over soon.

W: So do I. By the way, did you hear the weather forecast this morning?

M: Yes. It said partly cloudy today, with a strong wind from the northwest. The highest

temperature will be only six below zero, at least in the morning. But in the afternoon it will rise a little bit.

W: Then, the beautiful snow might melt away.

M: And we will get thick ice on the road, so be careful when you go out in the car. Text 10

Dickey, this is Tony, your old college roommate. I‟m in town for a meeting. I would have called before I came, but the meeting was supposed to last all day, and I didn‟t think I‟d have time to talk to you. It turns out that the meeting ended early. I‟m hoping we could get together for a while, but my plane back to Columbus leaves at 8:40. We are all fine. Helena likes her new job. Our kids are doing well in school. We are going to Italy for holiday this year. I‟m looking forward to going back there again. Remember what a great time we had when you and I went there in 2002? I hope I can find that great restaurant up in the hills. Remember it? Anyway, we are excited about the trip. I hope you and Camilla are OK. Well, I don‟t know what else to say in the machine, so I guess I‟ll hang up now. I‟ll try to give you another call from the airport before I leave. Really sorry I missed you. Give my love to Camilla. Take care. Bye!
