Why So Many People Sleep at McDonald's in Hong Kong
A survey in Hong Kong counted 334 people sleeping at McDonald's across the city during June and July, a great increase since a similar survey in 2013, which found only 57. The survey was carried out by an organization called JCI. They planned to provide service for the sleepers, but the government said that they didn't have the statistics, so the organization did the survey itself. To their surprise, 70% of the sleepers were not homeless. They had other places to sleep at. And most of them had either full--time or part--time jobs. Some said they just wanted to cut down the cost of water and electricity at home. Some said they didn't want to pay for the high rent of housing.
A Mr. Cheung said his flat didn't have any windows for air flow and he had to pay $ 2 for per unit of air conditioning(空调的每度电). That was why he chose to enjoy the air--conditioned McDonald's on hot summer nights.
第9页(共14页)
\"The free Wi—Fi, cheap food and bathroom facilities don't hurt. \" he added.
Other reasons include family or personal problems. One young worker disliked being at home because of a difficult relationship with his parents. Another 55--year--old woman slept at McDonald's to avoid going home to her angry husband.
Some avoid their homes even when there is no fight or argument--one elderly woman with no children found her home extremely lonely after her husband died, and so spends her nights at McDonald's among other sleepers.
\"We found that people are not only poor in pocket or poor in money, but poor in their hearts, their lives. \" JCI said.
McDonald's has made some rules to offer the best dining environment no matter what. JCI has advised the government to take action. \"However, more importantly, a change in social attitudes(态度) is needed, \"JCI said. \"The government can only do so much. After all, many of these people have homes and jobs. \"
\"Nowadays,we won't talk with strangers,we won't care about people next to us,\" JCI said. \"We would like to encourage people to care about people around them. \"
