When I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive.

After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels (地道). I was amazed that each

one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.

On the fifth day a tragedy (悲剧) happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after their earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up building their tunnels to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.

My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand that their tunnels were gone.

Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.

Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired (钦佩) for their hard work.

But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity (逆境) is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another.

Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.

45. What did the writer’s family do for him when he was seven?

A. They made an ant farm.

B. They bought a few ants.

C. They caught a lot of ants. D. They found an ant city. 46. What happened on the fifth day?

A. The earthquake happened.

B. The writer put his face on the ground.

C. The writer knocked the ant farm over. D. The ants started to make tunnels. 47. What did the writer come to realize a few years later?

A. Working together is useless.

B. Teamwork is important.

C. Adversity can’t be accepted. D. Working alone is amazing. 48. Finally, the writer thinks that the ants died because ________.

A. they worked hard

B. the writer made a mistake

D. they gave up when they met difficulties

C. the tunnel was gone

The way you read texts in a reading exam is very different to how you read a magazine, a web page or a book. These tips (实用的小建议) will help you to read the text in the right way and give you lots of advice on how to get the best mark you can in the exam. Difficult questions

There are always one or two tricky (棘手的) questions in exams so don’t panic (恐慌) if there is a question you don’t understand or can’t find the answer to.

·Is there a difficult question you can’t answer? Leave it and come back at the end. ·Don’t waste a lot of time on difficult questions you can’t answer. Find the answer

Finding the answer is the main purpose in a reading exam. Use these tips to help you.

·Usually, questions refer to information in the text in chronological (按先后次序的) order, i.e. the first question refers to information at the beginning of the text, the second question refers to information in the next part of the text, etc.

·Find the paragraph in the text that is connected to the question. Read the question again and then return to the text to find the answer.

·Underline, or highlight (用荧光笔标出), the parts of the text that help you focus and find exactly the right answers. Difficult vocabulary

There will usually be some words in the text that you don’t understand. The important thing is to be able to ‘read around’ the unknown words. These tips will help you learn how to do this.

·Use the context to help you understand the meaning. Read the whole sentence and the sentences before and after.

·What type of word is it? A noun? A verb? An adjective? An adverb? ·Does the word have a positive or negative meaning?

·Look for synonyms (同义词) in the text. Well-written texts use synonyms rather than repeating the same word. If you don’t know the word, it may be a synonym of another word in the text.

·Think about the topic. Which words do you know related to the topic? ·Is the word similar to another word you know? E.g. birth is similar to birthday.

·Is the word similar to a word in your language?

49. If you don’t understand a question or can’t find the answer, you should ________.

A. leave it and come back at the end B. worry about difficult vocabulary

C. use the context to help you understand the meaning

D. find the synonyms in the text that is connected to the question 50. Which one is useful for you to get the right answers?

A. To use the context to help you understand the meaning. B. To underline the parts related to the questions.

C. To think about words that are similar in your own language. D. To decide if the word has a positive or negative meaning. 51. The writer thinks the good text is ________.

A. with a main purpose

B. full of positive or negative meanings C. followed by some questions

D. not repeating the same word but using synonyms 52. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The advice on how to read magazines. B. How to get the meanings of the new vocabulary. C. How to read and get best score in the reading exam.

D. The advice on how to understand the passages in the reading exam.

The Best of Friends

The evidence (证据,迹象) for harmony (和谐) may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly held image (印象) of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels (争论,争吵).

An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. “We were surprised by just how positive today’s

young people seem to be about their families,” said one member of the research team. “They’re expected to be rebellious (叛逆的) and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds, they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s more negotiation (商议) and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”

So it seems that this generation (一代,一代人) of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-years-old Daniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I’m going out clubbing. As long as they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.” Susan Come, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”

Maybe this positive view (看法) of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenagers rebellion is not rooted (根植于) in real facts. A researcher comments (评论), “Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief (短暂的) period in our social history when teenagers were regarded (看作) as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over.”

53. What does “rock the boat” probably mean in Paragraph 2?

A. share family responsibility

B. cause trouble in their families

C. go boating with their family D. make family decisions 54. Compared with parents of 30 years age, today’s parents ________.

A. go to clubs more often with their children B. are much stricter with their children C. care less about their children’s life D. give their children more freedom 55. According to the author, teenage rebellion ________.

A. may not be a true belief

B. is common nowadays

C. happened only in the 1960s D. resulted from changes in families

Beautiful Hands

“O Miss Roberts! What ugly-looking hands Mary has!” said Daisy, as she walked home from school with her teacher.

“In my opinion, Daisy, 56 .”

“Why, Miss Roberts, they are as red and hard as they can be. How they would look if she would try to play on a piano someday!” cried out Daisy.

Miss Roberts took Daisy’s hands in hers, and said, “ 57 , — just the hands to look beautiful on a piano, yet they don’t have one beauty that Mary’s hands have. Shall I tell you what the difference is?”

“Yes, please.”

“ 58 . They sweep, wash dishes, helps to wash and hang out clothes, they are always trying to help her poor, hard-working mother. Besides, they wash and dress the children and mend their toys. They are full of good deeds (行为) to every living thing. I have seen them patting (轻拍) the tired horse and the lame (跛足的) dog in the street. 59 .

“I shall never think Mary’s hands are ugly any more, Miss Roberts.”

“I’m glad to hear you say that, Daisy, and I must tell you that they are beautiful 60 . “It’s a shame of myself, and so sorry,” said Daisy, looking into her teacher’s face with tearful eyes.

八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)

Never too late

A. Your hands are very soft and white

B. They are always ready to help those who need help C. Mary’s hands are the prettiest in the class D. because they do their work gladly and cheerfully E. Well, Mary’s hands are always busy

On the first day of school, our professor introduced a little old lady to us.

“Why are you in college at such a young age?” I asked later. She replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.”

“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated (激励) her taking on this challenge at her age. “I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.

We became friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

At the end of the term, we invited Rose to make a speech to our football team. I’ll never forget what she taught us. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her note card on the floor. A little embarrassed (尴尬的) she simply said, “I’m sorry. This whiskey (威士忌) is killing me! I’ll never get my speech back in order, so let me just tell you what I know.” As we laughed, she cleared her throat (喉咙) and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”

At last, Rose finished the college degree. One week after graduation (毕业) Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral (葬礼) to honor the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be. 61. Who did the professor introduce on the first day? 62. Why was Rose in college at her age?

63. How many secrets are there to staying young, being happy and achieving success? . When did Rose die? 65. What did Rose teach us?

Good morning, everyone! Welcome to East Carey Middle School and I’m Mr. Jackson from the Students’ Union. It’ s my pleasure to be your guide today. I will show you around our school, and especially I’m going to introduce something about the famous clubs in our school. The Sports Club has teams of basketball, football, volleyball and ping-pong. There are 25 members in each team. We hold

games between the team members on Thursday afternoon. And sometimes we play with the students from other schools. Do you like art? I hope so. We have the Art Club, too. In the Art Club, we have forty students. They are learning art from Mr. White who is from a nearby art school. Mr. White is really famous. But the most popular club in our school is not the Art Club. It’s the Music Club. What can you learn in it? That’s a good question. I can tell you that you can do many things. You can sing, dance and if you like, you can also play the instruments. The Music Club often hold many activities and they are held every Friday afternoon. Thank you very much and I hope you can enjoy your stay in our school and like the clubs here.

听力考试到此结束!
