Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be absolutely exact. Then carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way six blocks to the pharmacy (药房).

She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at that moment. So she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it!

“And what do you want?〞 the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen for ages,〞 he said without waiting for a reply to his question.

“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,〞 Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick... and I want to buy a miracle.〞

“I beg your pardon?〞 said the pharmacist.

“His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?〞

The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He bent down and asked the little girl, “ What kind of miracle does your brother need?〞

“I don’t know,〞 Tess replied with tears welling up. “I just know he’s really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my daddy can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.〞

“How much do you have?〞 asked the man from Chicago.

“One dollar and eleven cents,〞 Tess answered. “And it’s all the money I have.〞

“Well, what a coincidence! A dollar and eleven cents─the exact price of a miracle for your little brother,〞 smiled the man.

“Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.〞

The pharmacist’s brother, Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, was expert in neurosurgery (神经外科). The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long before Andrew was home again and doing well.

Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place. “That surgery,〞 her mom whispered, “was a real miracle. I wonder 答题卡上将该项涂黑。

how much it would have cost.〞

Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost... one dollar and eleven cents... plus the faith of a little child. 21. Tess took her money to the pharmacy to ______.

A. pay for the doctor’s bill B. buy her brother a miracle C. make a deal with the pharmacist D. see whether the money was enough A. She waited for a long time. B. She greeted the pharmacist. C. She hit the counter with a coin. D. She shouted at the pharmacist.

Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young ( less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs ), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.

However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission (服从).

In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog〞, and dogs can learn how to talk “cat〞.

What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.

C. serious

D. difficult

24. The writer thinks it was ______ that worked wonders and saved Andrew’s life.

A. Tess’s money C. Tess’s belief

B. Dr. Armstrong’s kindness D. Dr. Armstrong’s surgery

22. How did Tess attract the pharmacist’s attention?

The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets─to people who don’t get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

26. When are some cats and dogs likely to fight with each other?

A. They are introduced at an early age. B. They are cold to each other.

C. They misunderstood each other’s signals. D. They stared at each other.

Whenever something looks interesting or beautiful, there is a natural desire of us to capture (捕捉) and preserve it─which means, in this day and age, that we are likely to reach for our phones to take a picture.

Though this would seem to be an ideal solution, there are two big problems associated with taking pictures. Firstly, we are likely to be so busy taking pictures that we forget to look at the world whose beauty and interest encourage us to take a photograph in the first place. And secondly, because we feel the pictures are safely stored on our phones, we never get around to looking at them, so sure are we that we’ll get around to them one day.

The first person to notice the problems was the English art critic (评论家), John Ruskin. He was a keen traveler who realized that most tourists make a poor job of noticing or remembering the beautiful things they see. He argued that humans have a natural tendency to respond to beauty and desire to have it, but there are better and worse expressions of this desire. At worst, we get into buying souvenirs or taking photographs. But, in Ruskin’s eyes, there’s just one thing we should do─attempting to draw the interesting things we see, regardless of whether we happen to have any talent for doing so.

Ruskin said, “Drawing can teach us to see: to notice properly rather than gaze absent-mindedly. In the process of recreating with our own hands what lies before our eyes, we naturally move from a position of observing beauty in a loose way to one where we acquire a deep understanding of its parts.〞

Ruskin deplored the blindness and hurry of modern tourists, especially those who prided themselves on traveling around the whole Europe in a week by train, “Changing of places at a hundred miles an hour will not make us stronger, happier, or wiser. There was always more in the world than men could see if they ever walked slowly; they will see it no better for going fast. The really precious things are thoughts and sights, not pace.〞

32. According to Paragraph 2, when taking pictures, people tend to ______.

A. forget to appreciate something attractive on the spot B. find it hard to learn skills of taking good pictures

C. find a good way to keep things in their minds

D. have a chance to meet the challenge of new technology 33. According to Ruskin, what should travelers do to best express their appreciation of and desire for something beautiful?

A. To speak it out openly. B. To photograph it instantly.

C. To purchase it immediately. D. To paint it directly.

34. From the fourth paragraph, we can infer that Ruskin encourages us to be ______.

A. considerate and determined B. active and adventurous

C. creative and thoughtful D. sensitive and ambitious

35. The underlined word “deplored 〞 in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “______〞.

A. appreciated B. criticized C. favored D. ignored 第二节 (共5小题;每题2分,总分值10分)

Nowadays no matter where you are, you can see many adults and children playing with their mobiles phones. This can happen at a bus stop, in a restaurant or at a supermarket. Why is that? We’ve probably got two reasons. This first reason is supposed to be that people are trying to make good use of time. And the second one may be that people show little interest in what’s happening around them. However, focusing only on what’s on our mobile phones may not only do harm to our eyesight, but also prevent us from communicating normally. Therefore, some other ways to kill time are strongly suggested. For me, chatting with others is good replacement of playing always with mobile phones.
