They can result in a voice that is pleasing to listen to and can be used effectively. Or they can create a voice that doesn’t hold attention, or even worse, causes an adverse reaction. The three elements are volume, pitch, and pace; When evaluating volume, keep in mind that a good speaker will adjust to the size of both the room and the audience. Of course, with an amplifying device like a microphone, the speaker can use a natural tone. But speakers should not be dependent on microphones a good speaker can speak loudly without shouting. The second element, pitch, is related to the highness or lowness of the sounds. High pitches are, for most people, more difficult to listen to, so in
general speakers should use the lower registers of their voice. During a presentation, it’s important to vary pitch to some extent in order to maintain interest. Pace, that is how fast or slow words and sounds are articulated, should also be varied. A slower pace can be used to emphasize important points. 听力原文: Good morning. As part of your orientation to campus life, the Dean’s Office has scheduled a short tour of the medical clinic and the infirmary. We,
on the nursing staff, hope that none of you get sick. But just in case you do become ill, we want you to know what procedures to follow. If you have a really bad cold, it’s a good idea to have one of us check you over at the clinic. Several students last year didn’t see a nurse about their bad colds, and they developed terrible coughs. It’s possible to get pneumonia when you neglect the cough. If you do get something as serious as pneumonia, you’ll have to come and stay in the infirmary. A doctor visits the infirmary regularly. On the other hand, if you just have an ordinary cold, you can usually stay in your dormitory room. Many students try to keep up with their usual activities when they don’t feel well. As a result, they often get much sicker. I think it’s wise to rest more and skip a few classes. If you are 711, you can always get a medical excuse from one of us or from the doctor. The clinic hours are from nine to twelve every week day morning. But there is an emergency number you can call anytime, which you can find in the campus telephone book. 听力原文: Isn’t it amazing how small the world has become in recent years? Of course, the physical size hasn’t changed, but the world seems much smaller than it did a few hundred years ago. That’s because of our improved ability to visit faraway places, contact one another, and instantly learn what goes on in other places. A thousand years ago, people rarely left their town or village. Trips to nearby areas were made on foot or horseback, and there were fears of wild animals, bandits, and bad weather. Trips abroad were almost impossible for all but the richest and most powerful people. Communications were also limited, as it took weeks or even months to send letters long distances. About 150 years ago, train travel made trips hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away possible. Also, with the invention of the telegraph, messages could be sent long distances at a low price. Many barriers of distance and communication were starting to fall. In the 20th century, inventions such as the automobile, airplane, telephone, and television changed people’s lives greatly. People could travel across a city in a few minutes or across the world in a few hours. Televisions allowed people to witness important events while they took place. Computers and the Internet let people send letters instantly, access huge amounts of information, and make new friends around the world. As local communities continue to link together to form the global community, there will surely be many new tools and methods that make the world seem even smaller.
18. Which of the following statements is NOT true about life 150 years ago? A.Travelling long distances were easier than before. B.Messages could be sent quickly.

PART V READING COMPREHENSION (25 MIN)Directions: In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.
Surprisingly, no one knows how many children receive education in English hospitals, still less the content or quality of that education. Proper records are just not kept. We know that more than 850,000 children go through hospital each year, and that every child of school age has a legal right to continue to receive education while in hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to every 1,000 children in hospital. Little wonder the latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. It is found that half the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher. A further quarter have only a part-time teacher. The special children’s hospitals in major cities do best; general hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off. From this survey, one can estimate that fewer than one in five children have some contact with a hospital teacher -- and that contact may be as little as two hours a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher in hospital at all. They had not been prepared for it by parents or their own school. If there was a teacher they were much more likely to read books and do math or number work; without a teacher they would only play games. Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child falling behind and maintaining the habit of school to keeping a child occupied, and the latter is often all the teacher can do. The position and influence of many
teachers was summed up when parents referred to them as “the library lady” or just “the helper”. Children tend to rely on concerned school friends to keep in touch with school work. Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored or refused by the school. Once back at school, children rarely get extra teaching, and are told to catch up as best as they can. Many short-stay child-patients catch up quickly. But schools do very little to ease the anxiety about falling behind expressed by many of the children interviewed.

Computer people talk a lot about the need for other people to become “computer- literate”, in other words, to learn to understand computers and what makes them tick. Not all experts agree, however, that this is a good idea. One pioneer, in particular, who disagrees is David Tebbutt, the founder of Computertown UK. Although many people see this as a successful attempt to bring people closer to the computer, David does not see it that way. He says that Computertown UK was formed for just the opposite reason, to bring computers to the people and make them “people-literate”. David first got the idea when he visited one of America’s best-known computer “guru” figures, Bob Albrecht, in the small university town of Palo Alto in Northern California. Albrecht had started a project called Computertown USA in the local library, and the local children used to call round every Wednesday to borrow some time on the computers there, instead of borrowing library books. Albrecht was always on hand to answer any questions and to help the children discover about computers in their own way. Over here, in Britain, Computertowns have taken off in a big way, and there are now about 40 scattered over the country. David Tebbutt thinks they are most successful when tied to a computer club. He insists there is a vast and important difference between the two, although they complement each other. The clubs cater for the enthusiasts, with some computer knowledge already, who get together and eventually form an expert computer group. This frightens away non-experts, who are happier going to Computertowns where there are computers available for them to experiment on, with experts available to encourage them and answer any questions; they are not told what to do, they find out. David Tebbutt finds it interesting to see the two different approaches working side by side. The computer experts have to learn not to tell people about computers, but have to be able to explain the answers to the questions that people really want to know. In some Computertowns there are question sessions, rather like radio phone-ins, where the experts listen to a lot of questions and then try to work out some structure to answer them. People are not having to learn computer jargons, but the experts are having to translate computer mysteries into easily understood terms; the computers are becoming “people-literate”.
83. According to David Tebbutt, the purpose of Computertown UK is to______ A.train people to understand how computers work’ B.make more computers available to people
C.enable more people to fix computers themselves D.help people find out more about computers
正确答案:D

There must be few questions on which responsible opinion is so utterly divided as on that of how much sleep we ought to have. There are some who think we can leave the body to regulate these matters for itself. “The answer is easy,” says Dr.
A. Burton. “With the right amount of sleep you should wake up fresh and alert five minutes before the alarm rings.” If he is right, many people must be undersleeping, including myself. But we must remember that some people have a greater inertia than others. This is not meant rudely. They switch on slowly, and they are reluctant to switch off. They are alert at bedtime and sleepy when it is time to get up, and this may have nothing to do with how fatigued their bodies are, or how much sleep they must take to lose their fatigue. Other people feel sure that the present trend is towards too little sleep. According to one medical opinion, thousands of people drift through life suffering from the effects of too little sleep; the reason is not that they can’t sleep. Like advancing colonists, we do seem to be grasping ever more of the land of sleep for our waking needs, pushing the boundary back and reaching, apparently, for a point in our evolution where we will sleep no more. This in itself, of course, need not be a bad thing. What could be disastrous, however, is that we should press too quickly towards this goal, sacrificing sleep only to gain more time in which to jeopardize our civilization by actions and decisions made weak by fatigue. Then, to complete the picture, there are those who believe that most people are persuaded to sleep too much. Dr H. Roberts, writing in Every Man in Health, asserts. “It may safely be stated that, just as the majority eat too much, so the majority sleep too much.” One can see the point of this also. It would be a pity to retard our development by holding back those people who are gifted enough to work and play well with less than the average amount of sleep, if indeed it does them no harm. If one of the trends of evolution is that more of the life span is to be spent in gainful waking activity, then surely these people are in the van of this advance.
87. The author seems to indicate that______

88. The author disagrees with Dr. Burton because______ A.few people can wake up feeling fresh and alert B.some people still feel tired with enough sleep C.some people still feel sleepy with enough sleep D.some people go to bed very late at night
正确答案:C
解析:本题的相关信息为文章的第一段。Dr.Burton的观点是:人的身体会
. In the last paragraph the author points out that______ A.sleeping less is good for human development
B.people ought to be persuaded to sleep less than before C.it is incorrect to say that people sleep too little D.those who can sleep less should be encouraged

Last year was the fourth warmest since recordkeeping began in the 1880s and 2005 could go down as the warmest ever recorded, NASA scientists reported in a new analysis of temperature data. “There has been a strong warning trend over the past 30 years, a trend that has been show, to be due primarily to increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,” said James Hansen of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, based in New York. The most common greenhouse gas emitted by human activity is carbon dioxide. The burning of fossil fuels and trees, both Of which store carbon, have added CO2 emissions to Earth’s natural levels. Hansen and NASA colleague Makiko Sato noted that two additional factors are expected to play in- to 2005 temperatures. One is the presence of El Nino, when warm water spreads over much of the tropical Pacific Ocean. The other, they said, is that the Earth’s surface now absorbs more of the sun’s energy than gets reflected back to space. “The Earth is now out of energy balance,” Hansen and Sato wrote. “One result of this imbalance is that it makes it likely that global temperature in 2005, aided also by a weak El Nino, will exceed those of 21lB and 2(104 and perhaps even the temperature of 1998, which had stood out far above the temperature of any year in the preceding century.” Last
year was the fourth-warmest on record, with a global mean temperature of 57 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s about 1.5 degrees warmer than the middle of the century, said NASA scientist Drew Shindell. A third of the sun’s energy is reflected back into space after hitting Earth’s upper atmosphere, but two thirds gets through, driving Earth’s weather engine. A delicate balance of gases gives Earth its livable temperature. Known as “greenhouse” gases because they trap heat inside the atmosphere, they send a portion of that heat back to Earth’s surface. The gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Covering two thirds of Earth, oceans are the key source of moisture in the air and they store heat efficiently, transporting it thousands of miles. The oceans and marine life also consume huge amounts of carbon dioxide.
91. Which of the following is NOT the cause mentioned in the passage that leads to the warm tem- perature in 2005?
A.the increasing greenhouse gases B.the presence of El Nino
C.the imbalance of the earth’s energy
D.the Earth’s increasing absorption of the Sun’s energy.
正确答案:C

B.NASA scientists are optimistic about the weather in 2005.
C.The energy imbalance of the earth will result in the warm temperature in 2005.
D.Oceans help store heat more efficiently than other things.
正确答案:C 解析:推理题。文章第三段提到:“The Earth is now out of energy balance,”…“One result of this imbalance is that it makes it likely that global temperature in 2005,aided also by a weak E1 Nino, will exceed those of 2003 and 2004 and perhaps even the temperature of 1998,which h
It is usual to classify types of production as job production, batch production and flow production. In job production, products are supplied to the special requirements of a customer, and the whole project is undertaken as one operation which is completed before passing on to the next. A good example of this kind of work is shipbuilding. In job production a single item is produced at a time, whereas in batch production a number of similar items are produced in order to meet a continuing sales demand. Batch sizes vary, but the quantity which is produced amounts to more than immediate requirements, and the surplus production is stored. Finally, in flow production, the manufacture of a product proceeds from one operation to another at a planned rate of output. It is argued that the type of production method which is employed depends on the development of an individual company. That is to say, many factories begin manufacturing on a job production basis and proceed, as the volume of production increases, to batch and flow production methods. This is not always the case, however, since the type of production is not necessarily
determined by the product volume which is aimed at. In fact, in the car industry, tools are produced by jobbing methods, components are produced by batch methods, and the final products are assembled by flow methods. Flow production is associated with flow layouts, whereas job and batch production are associated with process layouts. In a process layout, machines of a similar type are grouped together in the same section of the factory, and work in progress is moved from one part of the factory to another. In a flow layout scheme, the manufacturing equipment is arranged in the same sequence as the operations performed on the product. Each of these operations must be capable of processing work at the rate required for assembly of the final product, and the output for each operation must be balanced in order to provide a smooth flow of work. There are advantages in both types of layout. In a process layout system there is more flexibility, and a greater specialization of machines and labor is possible, while in a flow layout system it is not necessary to maintain a high level of stocks or to demand great skill in the workforce.
96. The production method is not dependent on the size of a company because different products can be______
A.displayed at different locations
B.produced by different production methods C.designed by different specialists D.sold at different markets
97. According to the passage, one advantage of flow production is______ A.more flexibility

正确答案: Should Students Be Permitted to Carry Mobile Phones? Nowadays more and more students carry mobile phones. Those who are in favor of the idea argue that they can communicate with their friends more easily. Life without a mobile would be unthinkable for most of them. However I don’t think schools, including primary schools, should permit students to carry mobile phones. First of all, the evidence at present suggests that there is no adverse effect of mobile phones on the general population. But if there was a susceptible group, it would be most likely to be children, because their skulls are not fully thickened and their nervous system has not fully developed. Second, most of the students spend most of their spare time chatting on the mobile phones. They even chat when they axe crossing the street. This is proved to be highly dangerous. What’s more, long chatting on the phone does harm to their brain, and increase theft blood pressure. Last, some of the students always forget to keep their mobile phones silent in class. When their phone rings, it disturbs the teacher, as well as other students. What’s more, some of the students always send text messages with mobile phones in class, and of course these students couldn’t concentrate on their lessons. So it’s hard for them to make progress in theft study. In a word, schools should not permit students to carry mobile phones.
