Computers are playing an increasingly important part in modern society. They can do very complicated work, solve the most difficult mathematical problems and put thousands of facts in order in a very short time. Since they work accurately and at high speed, they save research workers years of hard work.
Computers seem indispensable in many areas，such as commerce, industry, transportation, and education. Here are some examples. First, in clerical work, computers are very good at handling repetitive work efficiently. For instance, in handling academic records, details about each student such as his name, age, courses, credits, etc. are fed into the computer. The computer makes all the necessary calculation. Another example of the same sort of process has been the use of computers in banking to deal with all the financial work. Secondly, we have the use of computers in information system. Accountants and statisticians can be relieved of all dull and routine work, for the figures can be worked out and checked entirely by the machine. For instance，computers are effectively used in railway stations and airlines to sell tickets and control seat reservation. Thirdly, computers have brought about great changes in our life. The Positive and Negative Effects of Computers
It is generally accepted that computers benefit human beings in many ways. But they have also caused many problems. Apparently computers have both advantages and disadvantages.
Computers are being used more and more widely in the world today, for the simplest reason that they are far more efficient than human beings. Computers have much better memories and can store huge amounts of information, and they can do calculations in a fraction of the time taken by a human mathematician. In fact, computers can do many of the things we do, but faster and better. They can pay wages, reserve seats on a plane, control machines in factories, work out tomorrow’s weather, and even play chess, write poetry, or compose music. Nowadays, it is very convenient and economical to do anything on the Internet, such as sending or receiving email, shopping, advertising, making friends, and entertaining. The globe will be like an office or home. This is the unprecedented charm of the computer. In short, computers have been making the whole world much more advanced and civilized than ever before.
However, computers have been creating many problems. First, viruses arise frequently, bringing great troubles to many people. Every year, various viruses cause loss of thousands of millions of dollars and ruin numberless projects. On the 26th of a month 1999, many personal computers were destroyed by the CIH virus. Secondly, some computer “experts” make huge amount of money by cheating a computer system, and they are very difficult to catch. What is worse, some people
transmit pornographic information or pictures on the Internet, which is harmful to young people.
Despite their disadvantages, computers have brought us far more benefits than troubles.
