The largest land animal remaining on earth, the African elephant, is of great importance to African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it significantly shapes the forest-and-savanna surroundings in which it lives, therefore deciding the conditions of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat. It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it both a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and bushes, as well as pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in not only deep tropical forests but also the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth, which attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut
out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small-sized plant-eaters to obtain their food as well.
Scientists are worried now that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant dies out, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the
whole ecosystem.

It was an interesting conversation with Paul, my local greengrocer the other day when I noticed the bird feed in his store that has recently appeared. What made everyone feel the need to feed our wild birds?Bird feed has become a regular item on a shopping list as normal as a bag of potatoes.I didn’t just wonder this privately but I asked my reliable groceryman what was going on.Exactly how did the birds make do for so long before we started feeding them?Judging by the popularity of this current consumer pattern I wonder just how much the wild bird food industry is worth. It must be profitable to the local groceryman who replaced a whole row of food for human consumption to make room for it.He smiled at me as if he’d been waiting for these questions for a while and he seemed surprisingly ready for the conversation.
The fact is animals’ habitats are disappearing. We’re cutting and clearing trees to make way for fields for cattle and sheep, creating fields of nothing but bare land. We’re changing the entire
ecosystem in the name of big mechanised agriculture and meat production that clogs(堵塞) your
heart and eventually kills you along with the wildlife it killed first. Not to mention roads and industry which wipe out everything.“We’re living in a different world,”he said.“Don’t take me wrong,I mean it in the best possible way,but wildlife is a thing of the past.”I’d thought of this concept before but to hear it said our loud by a small shop owner in the west of Ireland jolted me slightly. An earth of the future where species became fewer?Skies, land, oceans empty of
wildlife?People living in a sterile(荒瘠的) world?Is that really where we’re headed?
I’d only dropped in to pick up some bread. It was surprising that you could have such a conversation while getting something for breakfast.I told Paul we’d continue this discussion another day.“And a lovely day it is too,”he said.

When I was 13, my bedroom walls were covered with posters of the Monkees and Beatles. I wrote fan letters and daydreamed about meeting the objects of my affections. I begged my parents to attend every rock concert and watch every TV show featuring my favorite celebrities ; my friends and I discussed for hours all the things we would say and do when we met our favorite movie stars and pop singers. I drove my mother crazy! But after a few years, my
obsession stars faded as I matured and gained the confidence to socialize with \"real\" boys.
In the 35 years since I was a teenager, celebrity worship (崇拜) has increased among teens
due to the explosion of television celebrity gossip shows, and instant access to celebrity news on the Internet. It's no wonder that many teens are obsessed with stars when news programs often are filled with entertainment stories and the lives of celebrities.
Celebrity worship syndrome (综合征) is now considered a personality disorder. While it is normal for teenagers to follow the lives of their favorite stars, parents should try to monitor
everything their child finds interesting. Parents should take action if they suspect a teen is too obsessed with celebrities and showing little interest in school or withdrawing from the family. When teens talk a lot about celebrities and view them as just means of entertainment, this is considered normal celebrity worship. However, when a teenager is obsessed with a star and often expresses a desire to have a close personal relationship with a celebrity or feels they have a special connection to a star, this may be the time for concern. Recent studies have shown that teens who develop an unhealthy obsession with celebrities often suffer from low self confidence and depression. Teens who are overly obsessed with stars often have damaged relationships with their parents. 32. The first paragraph is intended to tell us _. A. parents needn't worry about celebrity worship B. celebrity worship can cause serious problems
C. celebrity worship only exists among teens
D. it's normal for a teen to have celebrity
worship
33. Parents should become concerned when their children
A. talk a lot about celebrities with others B. ask to go to their favorite star's concert
C. desire a close personal relationship with their favorite star
D. put up celebrity posters in their bedrooms
34. The last paragraph implies that _.
A. parents should not care too much about a child's celebrity worship
B. children can normally get out of celebrity worship when they are older C. children with celebrity worship usually have high opinion of themselves D. celebrity worship syndrome can be a serious problem if left overlooked
35. What is most likely to be talked about in the paragraph following the passage? A. The harm of celebrity worship syndrome. B. What to do with children's ce lebrity worship syndrome.
C. More signs of celebrity worship syndrome.
D. Who will suffer most from celebrity worship syndrome.

Tips for writing the college essay
While some high school seniors begin to enjoy writing their college essay, others fail to see the importance of it. 36 Creating the college essay is supposed to be a fun, and exciting task. It is a process of self-discovery. Some helpful tips:
1. HAVE FUN! 37 Relax, breathe and realize that this is the time to expose a side of you that a transcript (学生成绩单) cannot.
2. 38 The worst thing you can do is pick an ordinary topic. Stay away from volunteer work, your dead dog and vacations. T Admission counselors see thousands of essays a month; make sure your essay is distinct to your experience and personality. Do not focus on what you think they want you to write, but what is actually significant to you.
3. Don’t try to make yourself a victim.Although it is effective to appeal to the emotions of an admissions counselor, I do not recommend writing an essay about sad storis. Self-pity can be annoying, and most admissions counselors do not want that to be their first impression of you. The only exception to this is if you have an inspiring struggle that you overcame. 39
.
4. Your essay is not a longer version of your resume. If you sent in a resume, there is absolutely no need to restate what is on it. Many students like bragging(吹嘘) about how much
they do. It is amazing that you are involved, but admissions counselors do only want to hear about how much you do, especially if they already see this on your resume.
Good luck on your college essay!
40
.
A. It was received well by many.
B. Don’t settle for basic – be creative C. When you get upset, it is reflected in your work. D. You can talk about how a work changed your life.
E. They want to see aspects of you that can not be shown on a resume. F. In some cases, these 600 words determine an acceptance or a rejection. G. Make sure that the story is focused on your growth, and not on the struggle. 第三部分 英语知识应用

第四部分 写作
第一节 短文改错(共 10 小题;每小题 1 分,共 10 分) Dear Editor,
I'm sorry to occupy your precious time, and I really want to tell you anything about the problem of some people keeping too many pets nowadays. I take the problem more and more seriously for the following reason. First of all, as it is known to people, pets make loud noise that trouble residents a lot. What's more, it's widely accepted that animal wastes pollute the environment, where makes people quite
uncomfortable. Many owners like taking their pets to public places where they might frighten children or even bite people. The mostly important is that pets can spread some diseases and this has attracted much attention. Take all these factors into consideration, I sincerely hope that I can get help from you and expect the media do
something for this.
Yours truly, Wang Lin
